The basics

About chiropractic care

Your spine is made up of 24 movable vertebrae, and when even one joint loses its normal range of motion, the muscles, discs, and nerves around it can suffer. Over time those small restrictions add up — producing the back pain, neck pain, headaches, or radiating nerve pain that leads many people to see a chiropractor. Chiropractic care works by identifying and correcting these restricted joints so the whole system can function the way it should.

The adjustment itself is a quick, controlled movement applied to a specific joint — not a general crack-and-go routine. Your doctor performs orthopedic and movement testing before recommending a plan so each adjustment is targeted to what your exam shows. Adjustments are adapted for patients of all ages, from young children to active seniors — both of our doctors are certified in prenatal and pediatric chiropractic — and they can be combined with spinal decompression and soft-tissue therapies such as myofascial release for more complex cases.

What is chiropractic care?

A chiropractic adjustment is a precise, controlled movement applied to a spinal joint that has lost its normal range of motion. When joints become restricted — from an old injury, poor posture, repetitive strain, or just the wear of daily life — the muscles around them tighten, discs absorb uneven load, and nearby nerves can become irritated. That’s what produces the back pain, neck pain, headaches, and radiating nerve symptoms that send most people looking for help.

Chiropractic care aims to address the problem at its source. By restoring normal joint motion, adjustments can relieve nerve pressure, reduce muscle tension, and let the spine carry load the way it was designed to. It’s drug-free and non-invasive.

At Hopson Chiropractic’s Tyler and Chandler offices, care starts with a thorough exam — orthopedic and movement testing that shows your doctor which joints are restricted and which techniques will work best for your spine. Nothing is guessed, and nothing is one-size-fits-all.

What to expect

At your first visit, your doctor begins by listening — when the pain started, what makes it better or worse, and how it’s affecting your work, sleep, and daily routine. From there, a hands-on orthopedic and neurological exam pinpoints the restricted joints and any nerve involvement driving your symptoms. If X-rays are needed, your doctor will review them with you.

After the exam, you get a plain-English explanation of what we found and a care plan built around your condition and goals. When it’s appropriate, your first adjustment may be given that same visit. As your spine responds, your doctor updates the plan so you’re always moving forward.

Chiropractic Care FAQ

Still have questions? Contact us — we're happy to help.

Does a chiropractic adjustment hurt?

Adjustments are usually quick and gentle, and most people feel little to no discomfort. Some notice mild muscle soreness for a day or two — similar to a light workout — which fades quickly. Tell your doctor if anything feels uncomfortable.

How many visits will I need?

It depends on your condition and goals. After your exam, your doctor will explain what they found and recommend a schedule that fits your situation. There is no one-size-fits-all number of visits.

What conditions does chiropractic care treat?

We commonly help patients with back pain, neck pain, headaches, sciatica, whiplash, scoliosis, vertigo, hip pain, and pinched nerves — among others. If you're unsure whether your condition fits, call us and we'll be straightforward about whether an exam makes sense.

Is chiropractic care safe?

Chiropractic adjustments performed by a licensed chiropractor are generally considered safe for most people. Your doctor reviews your health history and examines you before care begins, and tailors techniques to your age, health, and comfort level.

Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy?

Generally, yes — with appropriate technique. Both of our doctors are certified in prenatal chiropractic care and use gentle adjustments and positioning to help ease pelvic, low-back, and hip discomfort. Dr. Lana Hopson, who is Webster Technique certified, sees patients at our Chandler office.

Can children get chiropractic adjustments?

Yes. Both of our doctors are certified in pediatric chiropractic. Pediatric adjustments use very light, fingertip pressure — very different from adult technique — and are adapted to a child’s age and size, from infants through teens.

Will my insurance cover chiropractic care?

Coverage for chiropractic care varies from plan to plan. Call either of our offices and we’ll go over your options before your first visit, including our New Patient Special for first-time patients.

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor?

No. Texas is a direct-access state, so you can see a chiropractor without a physician referral. Call either of our offices or book online to schedule your first visit.

How is chiropractic different from myofascial release?

Myofascial release works on soft tissue — the muscles and the fascia that surrounds them. Chiropractic adjustments target the spinal joints themselves to restore motion and reduce nerve pressure. Your doctor may recommend combining the two when both joints and soft tissue are involved.

What should I expect on my first visit?

Your first visit starts with a consultation about your history and goals, followed by a thorough exam and X-rays when needed. Your doctor explains what they found in plain English and, when appropriate, gives your first adjustment.

What our patients say

“Healing hands is how I describe Hopson’s chiropractor, made me feel so much better. I been in pain for years”
SG Susan Gonzales Verified review · Google
“Dr. William Hopson is very personal and professional. The first session is educational and thorough and includes X-rays. I have seen several other chiropractors and have experienced several different approaches to trying to solve my lower back pain and occasional neck and shoulder pain. After the first session with Dr. Hopson, I could tell I would finally have relief from chronic nagging lower back pain. I was skeptical that the relief would last so I returned for maybe one or two more sessions and my lower back pain has not returned for several months now!! I still visit his office on the rare occasion just to assure that no pain ever returns. I wish I could leave this review on all the competitors in town to save others the expense and time in pain. I can't recommend Dr. Hopson's chiropractic services enough!!!”
